Aney K. Chandy most recently served as Mayor Cory Booker's first corporation counsel in Newark, New Jersey, during one of the most important and exciting times in that city's history. In her role as corporation counsel, Ms. Chandy managed and oversaw the staff of 45 attorneys in the Department of Law and regularly provided advice and counsel to Mayor Cory Booker, the municipal council and the various city departments. Ms. Chandy stepped down as corporation counsel on February 1, 2008, and now serves as special counsel to the mayor for a transition period.
Ms. Chandy began her legal career in 1996 as law clerk for the Honorable Freda L. Wolfson (U.S.D.J.), then a federal magistrate judge. Between 1998 and 2006, Ms. Chandy practiced employment law in the Newark and New York City offices of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, & Flom LLP.
In 2005, Ms. Chandy began her career in public service in the New Jersey attorney general's office as the assistant attorney general in charge of the Civil Rights Litigation Practice Group. As a senior manager in the attorney general's office, she consulted and advised the attorney general on all matters relating to civil rights litigation in New Jersey and managed and oversaw the attorneys in the Civil Rights Practice Group representing the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights.
In May 2006, Ms. Chandy was tapped to serve as an assistant attorney general in the Executive Office of the Attorney General. In this capacity she reported directly to the attorney general and first assistant attorney general, served as a liaison to numerous divisions in the attorney general's office, developed policy, and participated in organizational decisions while maintaining select cases including New Jersey Supreme Court and federal court matters.
A member of the New Jersey, New York, and United States District Court of New Jersey bars, Ms. Chandy was also a founding member of the South Asian Bar Association of New Jersey and New York. Ms. Chandy received her B.A. in political science and English from Rutgers University in 1993 and her J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1996.
