and Ph.D).
New Jersey Hydrogen Learning Center Stakeholder Meeting
The meeting addressed: "Exploring Options for Large-Scale Hydrogen
Production." Speakers included Luke O'Keefe, director
of energy technology at Burns & Roe Enterprises, Inc. and Dr.
Serpil Guran, research scientist at the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection's bureau of sustainable communities and
innovative technologies.
Progress and Future, New Jersey Transit Village Symposium

The Alan M.Voorhees Transportation Center attracted over 160 planners,
builders and municipal officials to the Bloustein School for a symposium
regarding the state's Transit Village program. Transportation Commissioner
Kris Kolluri, NJ TRANSIT Board Member and Belmar Mayor Ken Pringle,
and Bill Dressel, executive director of the New Jersey State League
of Municipalities, were the featured speakers. To

Envisioning New Jersey's Energy Future
The New Jersey Sustainable State Institute held a conference entitled
Envisioning New Jersey's Energy Future at the Bloustein School,
the first public event of the NJSSI Energy Sustainability Project
that will set targets for key sustainable energy indicators. Over
100 attendees heard presentations from Jeanne Fox, president of
the NJ Board of Public Utilities; Dr. Aldert Hannemaaijer, who provided
a view of energy sustainability in The Netherlands; Dr. Anthony
Broccoli, a climate scientist from Cook College, and; Dr. Clinton
Andrews of the Bloustein School.

Isadore Candeub Memorial Lecture in Planning
Lawyer and planner Jerold Kayden spoke on the topic of eminent domain
and the Kelo decision. Kayden is the Frank Backus Williams
Professor of Urban Planning and Design at the Harvard University
Graduate School of Design, where he also serves as Co-Chair of the
Department of Urban Planning and Design and Director of the Master
in Urban Planning Degree Program.

Lecture on April 19, 2006, in the Special Events Forum. Robert Cotter,
who has served as the city planner of Jersey City, NJ, for over
a decade, spoke on the redevelopment of Jersey City's Hudson River
waterfront and discussed future redevelopment plans for the city.
The lecture series was established as a tribute to Professor Robert
A. Catlin, Bloustein School faculty member, who passed away in July

This annual event was held at Antonia's Restaurant, 40 Livingston
Avenue, New Brunswick. We cheered on our team as the planning and
public policy master's programs duked it out for intellectual supremacy.
Graduate Admitted Student Open House
The purpose of the day was to provide admitted graduate students
to our pubic policy master's, urban planning master's, and doctoral
programs the opportunity to visit the school and faculty, meet other
prospective and current students in the program, and learn more
about academic programs, funding options, and research opportunities

"A Nation at Work: The Heldrich Conversations" The John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development hosted the
first event in its new series with Tom Donohue, President
and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, as the featured
speaker. The Heldrich Conversations featured insightful and thought-provoking
conversations with national leaders from a variety of perspectives:
business, labor, journalism, and government.

Ruth Ellen
Steinman Bloustein and Edward J. Bloustein Memorial Lecture The Bloustein School and The Allen and Joan
Bildner Center for Jewish Life presented this lecture. Distinguished Israeli scholar Moshe Halbertal
spoke on Violence and the Sacred: Religion and Politic.
Mega Cities and the Impact
on American Urbanism The Bloustein School Alumni Association and
the Bloustein School presented this lecture by Professor Tony Nelessen. Professor Nelessen recently returned
from a year-long sabbatical in Asia, where he visited some of the
continent's most rapidly growing cities. He shared his photographs
and insights into the explosive development plans in this part of
the world and the potential impact on the United States.
2005 Annual Planning
Conference The Bloustein School and the New Jersey Chapter
of the American Planning Association hosted this conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick. Bloustein
School faculty and staff members served as panelists in nine of
the conference sessions.
Writing Award-Winning
Brownfield Grant Proposals by U.S. Congressman Robert
Menendez Over the last two years, only 11 of 567 brownfield
cleanup, assessment, and revolving loan fund grants were awarded
to New Jersey—worth just $2.4 million out of a total of $151
million awarded. Designed for municipal and county-level elected
officials, administrators, environmental assessors, and grant preparers,
this workshop included information from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency on how to improve grant applications. Several
New Jersey local and state government entities that have won these
competitive grants also gave presentations. The workshop was sponsored
by the National Brownfield Association, New Jersey Chapter; the
New Jersey League of Municipalities; the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency;
and the National Center for Neighborhood and Brownfields Redevelopment.
SAFETEA-LU: Is It Good for New Jersey The Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center sponsored this half-day
conference. Federal and state transportation
experts explained and interpreted the new federal transportation
bill enacted this summer by Congress. Speakers included Representative Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-8th District) of the
House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure; Jack
Lettiere, President of the American Association of State
Highway and Transportation Officials and Commissioner of the New
Jersey Department of Transportation; Arthur Guzzetti,
Director of Policy and Advocacy, American Public Transit Association; Mort Downey, former Deputy Secretary of the U.S.
Department of Transportation; Emil Frankel, former
Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation; and
staff members of the House Infrastructure and Transportation
Committee, and the Senate Banking, Housing and
Urban Affairs Committee.
Art, Policy & Planning: Cooperation
in Our CommunitiesThe Rutgers Association of Policy and Planning Students (RAPPS),
in conjunction with the Bloustein School and the Graduate Student
Association, hosted this forum. Speakers included Cynthia Nikitin,
Vice President of The Project for Public Spaces and author of Making
Public Art Work; and Peter Krusco, Co-founder of the Albus Cavus
Art Gallery of New Brunswick. Topics of discussion included integrating
public art in urban areas; Percent for Art funds; and public art
projects in New Brunswick and surrounding communities.
First Annual Robert A. Catlin Memorial Lecture
The Bloustein School recently established the Robert A. Catlin Memorial Lecture to honor the legacy of Professor Robert A. Catlin, who passed away in July 2004. Mayor Joseph Vas of Perth Amboy spoke on "Environmentally Sensitive Urban Redevelopment and Economic Growth in New Jersey" on Tuesday, October 5 in the Special Events Forum. Center for Government Services director Henry Coleman offered a moving tribute to Professor Catlin. Mayor Vas spoke on the urban redevelopment plans and progress in Perth Amboy
Terrorism 2005-2006: Is New Jersey Safe? The Center for Urban Policy Research and the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation
Center sponsored this presentation by Admiral James M. Loy (U.S. Department of Homeland
Security 2003-2005). Admiral Loy discussed potential threats to

Forum with Peter HuberThe Center for Energy, Economic and Environmental Policy (CEEEP)
held a forum with Peter Huber, co-author of The
Bottomless Well: The Twilight of Fuel, the Virtue of Waste and Why We Will Never Run Out of Energy on Wednesday, March
30, 2005. Following Dr. Huber's presentation, Professor Clint Andrews
commented on The Bottomless Well followed by questions
and discussion by the audience.
"Transforming Transportation"Anne P. Canby spoke on this topic as part of the the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center Distinguished
Speaker Series on Tuesday, March 29. Ms. Canby is the president
of the Surface Transportation Policy Project (STPP), a diverse,
nationwide coalition working to ensure safer communities and smarter
transportation choices that enhance the economy, improve public
health, promote social equity, and protect the environment.
"Non-Profits and Advocacy
in Policy and Planning: A Career Panel Discussion for Students and
Alumni".The Bloustein School, in coordination with the Rutgers Association
of Policy and Planning Students (RAPPS) and Bloustein School Alumni
Association (BSAA), presented Panelists included alumni from the Bloustein
School’s programs, with focus in the areas of community development,
the environment, public health and advocacy.
"The Impact of U.S. Immigration & Foreign
Policy in the Caribbean: Haiti Case Study” The Black Students Organization for Planning
and Policy (BSOPP) and the New Jersey Public Policy Research Institute
hosted this event. Panelists
included Paul Lachu, President and CEO of Caribbean American
Hispanic Business Journal; Eugenia Charles-Mathurin, Director
of the Mapou Foundation; and Jocelyn McCalla, Executive Director
of the National Coalition for Haitian Rights.
"The
Intersection of Art and Policy: A Discussion on Gentrification" The Rutgers Association of
Policy and Planning Students (RAPPS) presented this discussion.
Playwright Mari Eileen Brown, author of the one-woman, off-Broadway
play titled "There Goes The Neighborhood”, discussed
the gentrification experience that unfolded in her Brooklyn neighborhood.
Documentarian Nora Jacobson, creator of the film, “Delivered
Vacant”, discussed her 8-year chronicle of housing gentrification
in Hoboken. In addition to discussing their respective work, Brown
read an excerpt from her play and Jacobson showed select scenes
from her film. Bloustein assistant professor Kathe Newman facilitated
the discussion.

Indicators for New Jersey's Quality of Life The New Jersey Sustainable State Institute
presented this event. Speakers included Robert

Change The Community Development Institute
(CDI), in partnership with the Housing and Community Development

Conference. The conference offered skills and knowledge to carry out
community-based planning and demonstrated their importance in neighborhood
revitalization. Dr. Kenneth Reardon, noted community planning scholar
and chair of

planning department, was the featured speaker. Planners, resident leaders and community organizers from
neighborhoods in

currently engaged in community-based planning, shared their experiences

27. James A. Crawford, M.C.R.P. '74 and executive director of the
South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA), were honored as Alumnus
of the Year.
Building Communities
and People: The Role of Innovative Community Development Strategies The New Jersey Public Policy Research
Institute (NJPPRI) and Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G)
co-sponsored this conference. The revitalization
of low-income communities through the work of community and faith-based
organizations has grown in strength and impact nationally and in
New Jersey
. This conference
presented some of the best examples of these efforts and the support
base necessary to accomplish community development. The keynote
speaker was Rev. Dr. Floyd Flake, Senior Pastor Greater Allen Cathedral,
and President of Wilberforce University, former New York Congressman,
and a pioneer in the field of community development.

Policy presented this event featuring New Jersey Board of Public Utilities President
Jeanne M. Fox.

issues and important lessons learned from operating one of the largest
privately funded dislocated worker programs in the nation. For additional
