On Tuesday March 12th, NJPPRI celebrated the partnership
between the organization and the Edward J. Bloustein School of Public
Policy. The gala event attracted many past and present elected officials.
The audience included leaders from academia, private industry and the
state's nonprofit community.
Rev. DeForest "Buster" Soaries of First
Baptist Church (and former secretary of State) provided opening words.
Dean James Hughes then discussed the significance of the partnership
between the Bloustein School and NJPPRI. Vivian Sanks-King, chair of
NJPPRI's board of trustees and Mark Murphy, Executive Director of The
Fund for New Jersey also spoke to the enormous possibilities presented
by this unique partnership.
Wade Henderson, Executive Director of the Leadership
Conference on Civil Rights gave
the keynote address. Henderson's talk centered on racial and ethnic
"profiling" of all types - especially post September 11. Mr.
Henderson argued against profiling based on the fundamental unfairness
and unconstitutionality of the practice. Henderson's address was well
received and lead to a very good discussion with the audience. By all
accounts the evening was a great opportunity to showcase the best of
New Jersey. As Roland V. Anglin, the new executive director of NJPPRI
observed: "the evening set the bar very high for NJJPPRI going
forward. We hope to capitalize on the goodwill and support generated
by this event."
